WRITING, EXPERIMENTING, MAKING, DEVISING, RECORDING
Northern light through stained glass; high ceilings, wooden floors, comfy sofas and a roaring stove on colder days: working at St Mary’s is always inspiring.
Embraced by the breathtaking natural environment and warm charm of the building, St Mary’s is a family run creative arts space and recording studio with accommodation in the Scottish West Highlands.
Conceived by composer Jamie Smith and his crafter wife Charlotte as a living art work, the building and environs provide an inviting, inspirational and affordable workspace and retreat for artists and musicians looking to escape their daily distractions and find the space to create.
After a period of closure we are pleased that St. Mary's Space is once again open, albeit with slightly adapted working practices and services at this time.
We at St. Mary’s Space are committed to ensuring the health and well-being of everyone: our clients, the family team who run St. Mary’s and the local residents of the Appin and Fasnacloich area. In order to do this we are working under new operating guidelines in complete compliance with the latest Scottish Government recommendations. To find out how Social distancing and the additional health and safety requirements will have a material impact on working at St. Mary's Space, please read our guide.
Alternatively the studio is also very capably equipped for remote work and collaboration, offering the same high standard of recording and music production services and with plenty of experience working remotely. Contact us to arrange a phone call or zoom chat face to face.
The Church casts its spell on everyone who comes here. The towering wooden ceilings, roaring log fires, stained glass windows and sprung redwood floors create a truly inspiring atmosphere full of natural light, oddities, curios and vintage instruments with plenty of room to make a magnificent creative mess.
It's easy to get a huge, epic sound here, though the many panels, screens, cupboards and rooms provide plenty of other more intimate acoustic options too. Fabulous Tannoy Berkeley monitors and an SSL SuperAnalogue signal path reveal the nuance and depth captured by every microphone in this truly magical and unique acoustic.
For artists looking for a place to write or make work and that don’t need the grand space of the Church, the old Vestry is ideal. Quirkily decorated and very comfy, work in an atmosphere of peace and solitude or step out the door into the sublime landscape of the Scottish West Highlands.
"There’s precious little I wouldn’t recommend about this spot!
Run by 3 of the most wonderfully hospitable people you could hope to meet; housed in a beautiful, unique and inspiring building, located in one of the most stunning rural idylls on Earth!
I have worked, played, eaten and drank at St Mary’s and will do so again.
A perfect retreat for creatives and lovers of culture and nature"
"Spent a few days recording at St Mary's recently and can't recommend it enough. Beautiful space, great sound and a lovely family"
"We hosted a wedding photography workshop at St Mary's Space last weekend. I couldn’t be more grateful to Charlotte and Jamie for their incredible food and generous hospitality. St Mary's is the most incredible space, you can tell that they have put their soul into creating it. I was lucky enough to stay in the room which is just beautiful and provided the perfect light for photographs.
I absolutely cannot wait to come back and would highly recommend"

I just wanted to take the time to thank you and Jamie for allowing us to use your space for our wedding. Although we had a rough start to our day yesterday it still ended up being a wonder and special day for us and a big part of that is due to you and Jamie. Your home and space was a perfect place for Fergus and I to start our new life together and everything we could have imagined it to be. It will forever be a day we will never forget and cherish for the rest of our lives. Now it being the next day, I wish I could just go back to yesterday and relive it all because it went by so fast. Thank you again for everything.
