Joseph Snorquel is working alongside astroaudiologist Professor Wolff investigating the phenomena of ‘cosmic love rays’.  On his way to meet Charlotte one night, Snorquel falls into a subterranean cavern beneath ‘Dog Shit Alley’.  Through a weird sulphurous light, he witnesses a macabre musical ritual performed by the Two Gentlemen (recently escaped from the Asylum) and scrambles to escape the cavern, unhurt but hallucinating wildly. Believing he has been driven mad, he becomes an inmate at the Asylum and writes Charlotte a letter detailing these events.
